Self-Employment Experience
Psychotherapist. Opened private practice in October 2002. Individual psychotherapy provided to adults (with a focus on new parents) experiencing life transitions, depression, and/or anxiety via a psychodynamic object-relations perspective. Additionally provide facilitation of Listening Mothers groups and Reflective Parenting Program groups (mindfulparentscommunity.com) and for support groups sponsored by Postpartum Support International of Washington.
Postpartum Doula. Began providing postpartum doula services in January, 2000. Services include in-home emotional and physical support for new families, as well as education regarding normal postpartum recovery and infant behavior. (Postpartum Doula practice currently very limited.)
Birth Doula. Began professional practice as a birth doula in April, 1993. Services include providing emotional and physical support to women and their partners during labor and birth, as well as education about normal labor processes and support for informed decision making. (Birth Doula practice currently on hiatus.)
Educator Experience
Seattle Midwifery School, Seattle, WA. (October 2000 to present)
Faculty Member for Birth and Postpartum Doula Trainings. Responsible for educating enrollees in doula trainings. Teaching curricula include: anatomy and physiology of pregnancy, fetal development, mechanics of labor, pain management techniques, medical procedures used during labor, postpartum recovery, breastfeeding , newborn care, nutrition, food handling and housekeeping, emotions of pregnancy, birth and postpartum (including postpartum mood disorders),communication and listening skills, values clarification and cultural sensitivity.
Swedish Medical Center, Seattle, WA. (March 1995 to present)
Birth and Family Educator. As instructor for Childbirth Preparation Classes, responsibilities include teaching the processes of normal labor, birth and recovery to expectant parents, as well as relaxation and pain management techniques, variations in labor, and medical interventions which may accompany the birth process. Created and currently teach the Preparing for Postpartum class, which focuses on emotional adjustments for new families.
Group Health Cooperative, Seattle, WA. (August 1989 to February 1995)
Prenatal Educator. Responsibilities included teaching expectant parents about
normal childbirth, postpartum adjustment, and various medical procedures and interventions associated with these areas; teaching relaxation and pain management techniques; assisting in development of learning materials; and assisting in training new instructors. Also taught Newborn Care Class, focusing on normal newborn appearance, behaviors, and development, as well as parental adjustment and coping ideas.
Social Work Experience
Swedish Medical Center, Seattle, WA. (March 1993 to present)
Perinatal Social Worker. As member of Maternity Support Services team, provided comprehensive services to low-income pregnant and postpartum women and their families. Responsibilities included psychosocial assessment; supportive counseling; case management; referrals and advocacy; and birth control and parenting education. Shared information about psychosocial, developmental, and cross-cultural issues and community resources with team members (Left this position in June, 2000).
Jewish Family Service, Seattle, WA. (July 1990 to April 1992)
Emergency Assistance Worker/Clinical Intake Counselor. As Emergency Assistance Worker, provided supportive counseling, case management, crisis intervention and referral services for agency clients and the general community. Managed the Food Bank, served Food Bank clients, supervised Food Bank volunteers, and produced monthly statistical reports. Operated emergency housing program and assessed clients for loan and grant eligibility.
As Clinical Intake Counselor, created a protocol for management of the Counseling Program's waiting list. Interviewed and assessed all callers; and provided crisis intervention as required for telephone and walk-in clients. University
of Washington Education Opportunity Program, Seattle, WA. (July 1988 to April 1990)
Counselor. Provided academic and personal counseling to minority students and students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Recruited students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds for the Educational Opportunity Program.
